Certegy: "Sorry - did we say it was 2.3 million records stolen?"

Unsurprisingly, the number has mysteriously risen to 8.5 million. Eight million, five hundred thousand: that's how many people have had their personal information stolen from a company whom they most likely hadn't authorized to even have that information to begin with.

Why is no one up set with the companies who had hired Certegy? This all started for me with a first purchase from Amazon on May 4th. My first knowledge that my info was stolen was after I wrote a letter to Amazon telling them they had sold my infor and now someone called Variety was using it. It wasn't until July 3, 2007 that I got a call from Amazon's legal department telling me about Certegy. I blame Amazon. I made that purchase thinking Amazon was getting my information.I have since spoken to the Secret Service in Tampa and to a lawyer at Amazon, many, many times. As I see it, the only way to fix this and make sure our records have been turned over to authorities is to put pressure on Amazon..Don't make any purchases from them until it's fixed..and with that I would expect something in writing from them that would protect me in the future from my info being used..BUT, Amazon doesn't want to put themselves in that position because they know somewhere, someday, our infor will be used and they don't want to have to pay up for the sloppy collection of our personal records.

Honestly, it's not just certegy. Many companies have sensitive data in their systems. All it takes is on bad apple. I would be upset if it was my information stolen, but this is everywhere.

Still, as much as I hate to say it, give Certegy credit for at least admitting this wrongdoing. In many other cases I am sure it is "hush hush".

This should be a wake up call that if someone is determined enough on the inside, whether it is Amazon, Freddie Mac, Certegy, or Visa, your information can be compromised. In this case it looks like it was a greedy employee, who according to court records was making over 90k a year. I guess that wasn't good enough.

Anonymous said...

Anonymous: Of course plenty of companies have personal data records. Amazon, for instance, has a ton of mine. People accept this as a balance of the risks and conveniences of modern life. But that's not what we're talking about with Certegy. Certegy is a company that has collected the personal information of millions of people without their knowledge or consent. They might as well have broken into our homes and stolen our wallets. TWO thefts have happened here.

Holee: You're right. We must make it known to these companies that their use of Certegy's services is not acceptable.

Anonymous said...

Jane,

I know what you mean. But there are many companies out there. look at Equifax, which is what Certegy used to be. I didn't consent for them to have my credit information. Bright House cable screwed me. I paid everything off, have proof. I disputed it and guess what? They said it was valid. What can you do. I know you have qualms with Certegy. Many have qualms with Amazon. You can't make everyone happy. I haven't had any bad experiences, but then again, if my data was stolen, I would be pissed whether it was Amazon or whoever.

I do think there will be some lawsuits from this. We will see what happens, but I doubt these companies will stop using Certegy or Fiedlity or whatever they call themselves now.

Holee said...

As far as I'm concerned this was hush hush when it came to Certegy's first "News Release", there was NO mention as to the companies, like Amazon, that the information was stolen from. I really don't care that it was an employee from Certegy. It was the responsibility of Amazon to notify me that because of the purchase I made from them that my account numbers and personal information was stolen.
Look at it this way: YOU leave your wallet at my house. It is stolen by my neighbors son. I say NOTHING to you when you ask for your wallet. Instead I hand you a note from my neighbor who writes to you admitting HER son stole your wallet from my house and she reported it to the police. I throw my hands up and say I had nothing to do with it. So, are we still friends? I would think not.
When you hire someone to represent you it is the same as if you did the wrong deed. I didn't hire Certegy, Amazon did.

Anonymous said...

This is awful, can we do anything about it

Anonymous said...

I agree, but if it is not Certegy handling your check purchases, it is someone else. That, or they won't take checks. Certegy is like insurance to them, but in this case, it could be a liability too.

Holee said...

The problem I am having with this is Amazon told me credit card purchases are kept "In house". It was because I used the "new" system they offered "E check" that my purchase info was turned over to Certegy.
When the little message came up when I went to pay by credit card that "they" hoped I would use the new system, I had no problem using it. They didn't mention that by using it my information would not stay "In house at Amazon" but would be turned over to another company. Since it was Amazon who offered this new system and not Certegy, then it was Amazons responsibility to inform that I would not be using Amazon and that my personal information would be given to Certegy. There was no reason for me to use a check other then they asked me to try it. I trusted Amazon.
I was told by the Secret Service in Tampa that it was because of my letter and a few others written to Amazon that turned them onto this theft in the first place. That is why I got a personal call from the legal department at Amazon instead of the letter from Certegy.
Certegy went to court on July 9th to get all the records back from the marketing companies that had bought it. But, on July 10th, Variety still had me in the computer system and was still trying to sell me items against my checking account numbers. Infact, they asked for more personal information. It didn't look to me like going to court had gotten Certegy any of the stolen records back. This whole thing is a big joke. No matter what they say, there is no way of knowing who has my personal info and when they will feel like it's safe to use it.

Holee said...

THis is new infomation to me so I thought I'd post it. The marketing company that I reported to Amazon for having my information is called Variety. It is one of the names used by Strategia Marketing. It is also one of the 3 companies that the 8.5 mil records were sold too. It was raided on July 25th by federal agents and their assets seized. You can read it if you search "Strategia Marketing".At least now I know something is being done.

I've noticed that a lot of people are upset that their info was sold, but has anyone actually seen any fraud with their accounts?
I got the letter and within a week close to $600 of fraudulent charges had been made to my account. I caught it early and got it taken care of, and I've got a feeling that the letter and the charges are related, but has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Holee said...

You should report that to the Secret Service in Tampa, Fl. You can get the phone number on their website on line. Of course you need to have proof so I hope you have all the paper work connected to the charges.Just call them up and tell the girl who answers that you have proof of loss in the certegy case.

I AM ABSOLUTELY FURIOUS! I received a letter from Certegy stating that my banking account information was stolen and sold to data brokers. I've taken the last 5 days off of work to try and take the necessary steps to protect my identity, change bank accounts, put fraud alerts at the major Credit Bureaus, etc. I AM DEFINITELY interested in a class action law suit, and/or plan on contacting my own attorney on Monday. Apparently my bank (Wachovia)'s fraud dept had not even heard of the incident. After going to 3 branches, and no one knew anything about it, I finally called the bank’s FRAUD Dept and they issued me a case number. My question is: if Certegy notified the financial institutions, why didn't my bank notify me? if my bank is "on top" of it, aren't they liable for protecting me and notifying me? Who is liable for future incidents that may occur relating to my identity since it is now available and sold to so many different data brokers? Am I to be responsible for all of the potential legal fees involved with correcting my credit history, my banking, and all of my associated banking records? debit cards, Visa, Master Card, mortgage, and everything else under the sun? The Certegy letter and also Wachovia recommends filing a police report. I tried that but the City of Raleigh police said that they can't file a report unless something has happened to my credit and there is an actual incident. That's just great! So I have to put in several hours a week monitoring my credit with each of the 3 Credit Bureaus? and which, they already have some incorrect data and have me associated with another person in Virginia who has my same name. What a fricking mess. Stupid idiots. Didn't Certegy make sure their employees were BONDED and INSURED and fingerprinted, just as ALL banking employees must be? no matter what their position?

Anonymous said...

Knock on wood, it appears I have not yet lost money or had fraudulent charges appear on my account. I am changing bank accounts tomorrow -- opening a new one while keeping the old one and watching it until all my direct deposits and withdrawals are switched over. Quite infuriating, and written notice arrived a month after the fact!

I hope also to get free credit monitoring. Thank heaven, I am a bit "A-R" and check all my accounts two to three times per week.

Anonymous said...

"Still, as much as I hate to say it, give Certegy credit for at least admitting this wrongdoing. In many other cases I am sure it is "hush hush"."

As of their July 24th 8-K filing with the SEC Certegy is still claiming that there has been no fraudulent financial activity as a result of this, which, based upon my own personal experiences and reading about those of others, is a complete lie. Nice of them to tell is it was 2.3 million, then 8.5 million AND that we don't have ANYthing to worry about because people aren't using our information for anything but "marketing." I'm pretty sure I didn't spend $1,500 in FRANCE, while I was in Nevada...

Find out what info Certegy has on file about you:

UNITED STATES - Consumers - Certegy Check Services
Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act ("FACT") Disclosure Request Instructions

How to Request Your Free Annual File Disclosure from Certegy Check Services:

The Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act, usually referred to as the FACT Act, gives consumers the ability to request a free copy of their file from any consumer reporting agency once during any 12-month period. Certegy Check Services is a “specialty consumer reporting agency” under the FACT Act and maintains a toll-free telephone number for consumers to request a copy of their file.

To request a copy of your file, you can call our special toll-free number 24 hours a day. The toll-free number to request a copy of your file from Certegy Check Services is 866-543-6315. This is an automated system and you will be asked to enter your drivers license or state ID number, date of birth, checking account number, and zip code using the keypad on your touch-tone telephone.

Please note: Before calling Certegy to request a copy of your file, have your check and drivers license or state ID card in front of you. Since drivers licenses and state ID’s may include letters as well as numbers, the automated telephone instructions will ask you to “convert” any letter to a number. For your convenience, these instructions are also presented here:

* First press the “#” key on your telephone keypad - this tells the automated system that the next entry will be a letter.
* Then, press the key on your telephone keypad that contains the letter you want to enter.
* Since there are several letters on each key, you will then need to tell us which specific letter appears on your license by entering that letter’s position on that key.

For example, if your license number contains the letter “K”, you would first press “#” , telling the system that you are going to enter a letter, followed by pressing “5” since that is where the letter “K” appears on the keypad. Then, you would press “2” since the letter “K” is the second letter on that key. This is illustrated below:

If we cannot validate your identity over the telephone from the information you give us, you will be asked to mail your request.

Also, if you prefer, you may mail your file request to Certegy rather than using the automated telephone system. If you write to Certegy to request your free annual file disclosure, you will need to include a copy of your drivers license, a voided check, and a tax or utility bill to verify that you are entitled to the information that you are requesting. Send the request for your file disclosure to::

"I'm pretty sure I didn't spend $1,500 in FRANCE, while I was in Nevada... "

And you can't prove the information came from Certegy. It's coincidental, but it's not proof. I don't think you can prove it.

Anonymous said...

you're right. i'm sure it's nothing. besides, Certegy, as we already have found out, remains steadfast in its efforst to protect our data. I don't see how these two events could be remotely related... purely coincidental that Certegy works with casinos and after returning from Las Vegas I've got fraudulent financial activity on my accounts...

it's all bullshit. if they're as good at protecting us as they THINK they are, THEY should prove to ME that this wasn't a result of their data theft.

I am upset with the companies that use Certegy (which number in the hundreds of thousands), and Certegy themselves. I was notified in July that my personal information had been compromised, and had to close a checking account that I've had for over 24 years! Now, that I've opened a new account, Certegy is not accepting checks on my new account because there is a pattern of check writing that seems suspicious to their computer system! Duh!!! Because of them my check writing patterns will never be the same!!! I have no history of ever writing insufficient checks, and there are thousands of dollars accessible in the account in question. I have contacted my state attorney generals' office, as well as the corporate legal offices of the business where the check was denied. There are other complaints against Certegy in my state with the attorney general, however, when I contacted the corporate office of the business, they were very unaware that Certegy had compromised any of their customers' information. Certegy is only sharing the breech of security with whomever they are legally responsible to do so. They DO NOT want their paying customers to know about it!! Contact the stores where you shop, ask them if they use Certegy, and then start calling corporate offices and filing complaints. They won't continue to use them for long if they start having numerous complaints to deal with!! Before July 2007, I had never heard of Certegy, and had no idea that they had any information whatsoever about me!

I received three postcards in the mail re: the class action lawsuit. At first I was puzzled. I couldn't recall why I would be listed for this. Two of the cards were in my maiden name, the other in my married name.

Then, after doing a google search, I came across the stuff regarding Certegy. It jogged my memory about the letter I'd received last summer about this.

Honestly, I don't know what the reason was that I was included. I do know that there has been a large number of "pre approved" credit offer being sent in both my maiden and married names...I've now been married almost a year and a half, so, this junk coming in the maiden name is a bit weird at this point.

Perhaps these are being sent to me because of this particular issue? I shred these "offers" and don't respond.

I was at Target's today and wrote a check for 221.59 and Certegy refused to approve the check. They said if fit a profile. I had plenty of money in the bank to cover it. I do not have a history of bounced checks, I have banked at that bank for 20 years. I went to the bsnk and they were just as puzzled as I was. I will never shop at Targets again. I hate Walmart's, but I guess I may have to shop there or pay higher prices at other stores. The Certegy employee suggested I use another type of payment. These people are crazy and they have the nerve to act as if you're the nut.

Certegy needs to be put out of business. Disgusting how they claim to be a Check Service Company. You realize they are no-good company to deal with when they want even authorize to cash a government check. Any company who deals with this flim flam organization should be put out of business with them.

However, think on this, suppose you added a little information?
I am not saying your information is not good., but suppose you added
a headline that makes people desire more? I mean "Certegy: "Sorry - did we say it was
2.3 million records stolen?"" is kinda vanilla. You might glance at Yahoo's home page and watch how they create post headlines to get people to click. You might add a video or a related picture or two to grab readers interested about everything've written.
In my opinion, it could make your posts a little livelier.
